This weekend I watched the film Pierrot le Fou by Jean-Luc Godard. It is based on the novel Obsession by Lionel White. He allegedly shot the film with little or no script, requiring the wonderful actors: Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina to improv. But, Anna Karina claims the film was obsessively planned out to the smallest detail. However the film was made it is simply brilliant and beautiful. It unfolds like a dream. The philosophical dialogue and the tantalizing imagery gives you a colorful feast for the eyes and the mind. As the film slowly makes it's way to your heart. I don't dare give away an ounce of the plot, but I will tell you it is about the madness of love.
And here are some memorable quotes:
Ferdinard:I wonder what's keeping the cops. We should be in jail by now.
Marianne:They're smart... They let people destroy themselves.
Marianne:What are you doing?
Ferdinard:[looking at the mirror] Looking at myself.
Marianne:And what do you see?
Ferdinard:The face of a man who's driving towards a cliff at 100 km/h.
Marianne:[turns the mirror towards herself] I see a woman who is in love with the man who's driving towards a cliff at 100 km/h.
Ferdinard:So let's kiss.
Ferdinard:Why do you look so sad?
Marianne:Because you speak to me in words and I look at you with feelings.
Marianne:Look at the last page, there's a little poem about you. It's by me.
Ferdinard:Tender... and cruel... real... and surreal... terrifying... and funny nocturnal... and diurnal usual... and unusual handsome as anyone
Marianne:Pierrot le Fou !
Ferdinard:My name is Ferdinard. I have told you often enough. Christ almighty! You bore me to death!
Ferdinard:Poetry is a game of loser-take-all.
Ferdinard:I think your legs and breasts are very moving.
Ferdinard:It's a good thing I don't like spinach, because if I did I'd have to eat it, and I can't stand the stuff. It's the same with you, only backwards.
